Carole A. Hopfenzitz, born Carole Bernard in Brockton, Massachusetts on December 31, 1937, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2022, in Bradenton, FL.

Carole was the daughter of Paul and Virginia (Kilson) Bernard who predeceased her in 1984 and 1987. As a young woman, Carole attended nursing school and earned her Bachelor’s in Nursing. She was very proud to run the neurosurgical unit and assist in specialized surgeries. She married Henry Lustig in 1967 and retired from nursing after their son, Michael was born. Carole and Henry went on to have a second child, Sonja. They raised their children in Ferrisburgh, Vermont. In 1989, Carole returned to the field of nursing. After becoming re-licensed, she worked for several nursing homes in Vermont.

In 1997, Carole and Henry retired to Gold Beach, Oregon. After Henry passed away in 2003, Carole met her second husband, Ewald Hopfenzitz. Carole and Ewald built a life in Gold Beach, spending their time caring for their dog Fritzy and cat Rusty, attending competitive chess tournaments, being ham radio operators, and traveling. Carole was also predeceased by Ewald in 2016.

In 2017, as Carole’s health began to decline, she moved to Bradenton, FL.

Carole is survived by her sister, Barbara; son, Michael Robert Lustig of East Weymouth, MA and daughter, Sonja Jeanne Hayes (Robert) of Parrish, FL. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Jacob and Jessica Lustig, both of Weymouth, MA and Connor and Kael Hayes, both of Parrish, FL.
