The Marauders (12-7) fell 3-2 in 14 innings on the road at Charlotte Sports Park on Wednesday night. The Stone Crabs (7-12) plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 14th on Justin O’Conner’s single through the drawn in infield. Bradenton position player Walker Gourley (L, 0-1) took the loss after being summoned into action on the mound in a second straight game.
Facing the middle of the order in the 14th, Gourley allowed a lead-off double to Leonardo Reginatto. Patrick Leonard’s infield single to shortstop put runners at the corners. With the infield in, Gourley was able to get one out on a grounder to third, but O’Conner yanked a ball through the left side to end the game.
Bradenton struck first against Charlotte starter Bruedlin Suero. Ashley Ponce singled in the top of the first inning, moved to second on Josh Bell’s groundout, and scored on an RBI-triple to left by Jose Osuna. Suero did not allow another earned run.
Charlotte rallied with three doubles in the fourth inning off Orlando Castro. Leonard drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly to right field after consecutive doubles put runners on second and third. Marty Gantt’s double put Charlotte on top 2-1.
In the Bradenton sixth, Suero struck out Josh Bell but O’Conner’s passed ball allowed Bell to reach. Osuna doubled to put runners at second and third. Suero was lifted for Marcus Jensen. Max Moroff’s infield single to first base plated the tying run, but the Marauders could not score again. Jensen induced a pop-out by Jin-De Jhang and a double play grounder to second from Eric Wood to end the inning.
Josh Smith pitched four scoreless innings out of the pen after Castro was lifted. Castro pitched six innings. Bryton Trepagnier added three scoreless frames in extras. Ryan Garton (W, 2-0) pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win for Charlotte.
The final game of the four-game set will be played Thursday at Charlotte Sports Park. Jason Creasy takes the hill for the Marauders. Creasy has not allowed a run in his last two starts, spanning 11 innings. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard live online at www.BradentonMarauders.com.
