Fire is fast, hot, and deadly. It only takes minutes for thick, black smoke to fill a house. A smoke alarm can provide the extra minutes you need to escape your home safely.

Always ensure that you have working smoke alarms on every level of your residence—place smoke alarms inside each bedroom and outside all sleeping areas. Test the alarms monthly by pressing the test button until you hear the alarm sound.

The City of Bradenton Prevention Division has partnered with the Red Cross and other organizations to provide free smoke alarms to those in need. We also assist with the installation and testing of these devices.

The division has conducted smoke alarm blitzes in areas affected by large-scale fires to ensure that residents have the necessary equipment.

It's important to note that smoke alarms only last for 10 years. You should also change the batteries at least twice a year. One of those times, check to ensure the device is less than 10 years old.

You can find the manufacture date on the back of the alarm. If you have any questions, or concerns, or need assistance, please contact the Bradenton Fire Department at 941-932-9600.
