In recent years, the three leading days for home structure fires caused by cooking were Thanksgiving—80%—followed by Christmas Day and Christmas Eve. Thanksgiving and Christmas meals bring families together, and the BFD urges you to celebrate safely.
Stay in the kitchen when cooking anything on the stove top. Keep a baking sheet close to extinguish small stove-top fires. Make sure your smoke alarms are working and your fire extinguisher is up to date and nearby. Choose a fryer that does not use oil or purchase your fried turkey from a grocery store or restaurant.
If you must fry your turkey at home, place the fryer at least ten feet from any structures or trees, and make sure your turkey is completely thawed and dry before cooking. When decorating for the holidays, choose flame-resistant decorations.
Select battery-operated candles, replace damaged lights, and keep live Christmas trees watered. Take these steps to protect your loved ones and ensure a safe holiday for everyone.
