As the new school year begins, students and staff at Sugg Middle School will notice a new face on campus. Officer Terrell Brown has joined the school as the new School Resource Officer (SRO), succeeding Officer Eric Williams, who recently retired after over 20 years of dedicated service. We thank Officer Williams and his commitment to protecting and mentoring our youth, and we are excited to welcome Officer Brown to the SRO team.
The City of Bradenton’s School Speed Zone Camera Program remains active for the 2025-2026 academic year. Speed enforcement cameras monitor 10 school zones within city limits. The cameras issue $100 violations to the registered owners of vehicles traveling more than 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit during school hours.
Last year alone, 12,320 violations were recorded—including a shocking 78 mph in a 25-mph zone at Sea Breeze Elementary. That’s 53 miles over the speed limit—endangering the lives of children, parents, and staff. To promote safety and transparency, the department has created a website that provides information on camera locations, school-specific enforcement times, and frequently asked questions. We urge all drivers: Please slow down and stay alert in school zones. School Speed Zone Camera Program webpage.
Lastly, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for the tremendous support shown to the Bradenton Police Department following the tragic loss of Officer Zachary Butterfield, who died by suicide. Zach’s passing is a devastating reminder of the mental health challenges many first responders face.
We are committed to encouraging open, honest conversations about mental health and breaking down the stigma that often prevents people from seeking help. If you or someone you know is struggling, please call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline—available 24/7.
