Community Garden Plots in Palma Sola?

Posted

The Palma Sola Botanical Park Foundation is conducting a survey to gauge community support for the use of a parcel of county-owned property for community garden plots and other agricultural education activities.

From the organization:

The property just to the south of Palma Sola Botanical Park located at 1401 99th Street NW Bradenton 34209 (where the vegetable co-op used to be) is owned by Manatee County. This property is a portion of the land formerly owned by Geraldson's Family Farm (don't worry, the farm stand is still there!).

Manatee County wants to protect this land and use it for agricultural education to demonstrate backyard gardening through community garden plots, composting, backyard beekeeping, small-scale farming operations, youth animal projects similar to the county fair, and how to grow in hydroponic systems. The Palma Sola Botanical Park is in favor of this as we are already great neighbors partnering in events and would love to turn the end of the old Palma Sola loop into an environmental education one-stop shop, providing shared school field trips and so much more.

We are soliciting community feedback in order to move forward. Please share a few minutes of your time by answering 4 quick questions about the development of community garden plots by using this link.

About the Palma Sola Botanical Park
In 1990, the grassroots initiative for a botanical park began when local citizens and community groups rallied to save the 10-acre site that had served as the Manatee County Nursery. In 1993, the non-profit 501(c)(3) Palma Sola Botanical Park Foundation, Inc. was established and the park has evolved ever since. The park does not charge an entrance fee and receives no federal, state, or local government subsidies. We rely greatly on donations to keep the park open free of charge to the public 7 days per week.
