Manasota Elks in partnership with Oneco Elementary School hosted a special project donating lap blankets to veterans. Mrs. Marie Mueller and Mrs. Jill Gallagher and nearly two dozen students spent the past several weeks in a quilting club at Oneco Elementary making over 125 lap blankets for our local veterans program. “We made lap blankets for the community to help them” said Principal Tina Stancil. We give them to our veterans at this time of the year. It’s the season for giving and showing recognition of their service to our country and in honor of Pearl Harbor Day. Student Evin Joserosado said “This means a lot to me because the veterans fought for us and I would like to thank them for their service” Evin has been part of the Quilting Club for three years.
Manasota Elks members, Ed Neally and Jim Kollath explained what this means to our veterans and how much their work is appreciated. Students were able to talk with residences from Bay Pines VA Healthcare System located in St. Petersburg. This year 3 residents from the home visited Oneco Elementary during a special luncheon and presentation donated by Sweetbay. Ed Neally and Jim Kollath talked with the students about their experiences in the service and how it impacted so many lives. Swat (Successful Women Aligning Together) has recently inaugurated their new officers. The meeting took place at the SWAT Annual Dinner at Sarabay Country Club On November 237th 2012.
SWAT Networking is a wonderful women's only networking organization that provides a venue for business women to gather and support each other. SWAT networking Successful Women Aligning Together holds lunchtime meetings in Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch and Manasota every month. They have evening events that are held around the county at various locations as well as one on the Second Thursday of every month at the Polo Grill.

Bridge Street will be changed from its normal tropical paradise into a Winter Wonderland on Saturday, December 15. Snow flakes, a visit by Santa and Mrs. Claus, holiday music and performances, special sales at the shops, holiday treats, gift basket and wreath giveaways, fabulous gift ideas and a lighted boat parade are all planned to make the season merry and bright.
The Bridge Street Merchants Association, a not for profit organization, will be hosting an all day holiday celebration on Saturday, December 15, on Historic Bridge Street in Bradenton Beach, Anna Maria Island. There are actually three events within one.
The first is the Holiday Open House Walk About which will be going on all day beginning at 10:00 am. The Bridge Street Shops will offer special pricing on their merchandise and services. Many shops will have treats available for shoppers as they peruse through the wide variety of boutiques and stores available on Bridge Street. There will also be a Holiday Bazaar with great holiday gifts, crafts and poinsettias.
The day will continue with Christmas on Bridge Street from 3 pm – 7 pm. The Christmas on Bridge Street event includes a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, holiday music by DJ Tom Barrons, and a special holiday performance by Rowlett Magnet Elementary drama and choir students. Fabulous gift baskets containing resort stays, dinner certificates, jewelry, spa services, shopping gift certificates, certificates for area attractions and activities, beautifully decorated holiday wreaths and much more will be raffled to benefit the Manatee County Food Bank and the All Island Denominations Food Bank. It is even going to snow on Bridge Street making it a true winter wonderland - Florida style. A special Children’s Gift Bazaar will also take place where area school kids will sell handmade crafts, baked goods and holiday items. Dogs and cats will also be available for adoption from the county shelter from 1:00pm-5:00pm. People food and Pet food will be collected to supply the area food banks with much needed food for people and their pets during the holidays and throughout the year. Toys for Tots will also be collected at the event.
The event will end with the Cortez Yacht Club Lighted Boat parade shortly after dusk. The students, faculty, and parents of Saint Stephen's Episcopal School came together this morning in the Upper School's Palm Courtyard to celebrate the successful results of a $2 Million matching-gift challenge and to learn that completing the total $4.5 Million campaign for the School's Athletic Complex is in sight.
"Early this summer Elizabeth and J. Stuart Moore offered Saint Stephen's a $2 Million matching gift towards the construction of a new athletic complex - provided the School could raise another $2 Million by December 1, 2012," said Head of School, Jan Pullen. "The Moore's generous offer was a challenge we were thrilled to receive and we're determined to achieve."
The athletic complex is part of the School's long-range site plans and will be situated on the School's 35-acre campus. The complex will include a lighted, 800-seat football/lacrosse/soccer stadium with an eight-lane regulation track, along with regulation-size baseball and softball fields with dugouts, batting cages, press boxes, new restrooms, and a concession stand.
The athletic complex will have a unique feature for Manatee County as it will house the county's only regulation, rubberized track. It is a resource that Saint Stephen's plans to share. "Having this facility will truly be a gift," said the School's Athletic Director, Carlos Boothby. "We've already begun contacting groups, such as the Special Olympics Manatee County, to offer use of the future facilities. We're also hoping to host regional and possibly state track and field competitions."
"The full cost of the athletic complex project is $4.5 Million," said Pullen. "The School community has come together and donated well over $2 Million to meet the Moore's challenge...giving us a total of over $4.3 Million towards the $4.5 needed." Pullen continues, "Finishing the last stage of the $4.5 Million campaign will be accomplished through a few outstanding pledges and a new $50,000 challenge."
The School made the exciting announcement that a donor will match the next $50,000* given in order to help raise the last dollars needed to complete the campaign. The School hopes this new challenge will help bring the campaign to a successful conclusion before the end of the 2012.
Ground-breaking for the athletic complex is planned for March 2013 and work is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2013-2014 school year. Gifts to the campaign can be made and plans for the complex can be seen at www.saintstephens.org/thechallenge.
The success of this campaign was possible only because of the hard work of the campaign committee and the Saint Stephen's community.
