Community Spotlight: Steven Mamus, M.D. Featured in ABC 7

SARASOTA – Steven Mamus, MD, nationally-renowned medical oncologist with more than two decades of expertise in the treatment of cancer and blood related disorders, was featured in the ABC 7 MySuncoast Health segment, “Chemotherapy Side Effects and the use of Acupuncture” on Friday, December 27, 2013.

Dr. Mamus founded the Cancer Center of Sarasota in 2006 in order to bring personal, patient-centered care blended with university-based medical expertise to cancer patients in the Sarasota area.

ABC 7’s Alix Redmonde spoke with Dr. Mamus about using the combination of Chinese herbs and acupuncture to treat the harsh side effects which often accompany chemotherapy.

“The potential side effects of chemotherapy include nausea, vomiting, a sour stomach, feeling very tired or fatigued. We certainly have a number of nausea medications that are given “For people who have a very difficult problem with nausea, we can use Marinol, which is marijuana tablets” said Dr. Mamus. He said he would certainly consider acupuncture treatments for patients suffering from fatigue and nausea, and that there is room for both Eastern and Western medicine. “The combination of Eastern and Western medicine could be helpful, particularly for patients who are not responding well to traditional medications, particularly for things like nausea” stated Dr. Mamus.

Dr. Mamus is board certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology, and Internal Medicine and is a member of the American Medical Association, Florida Medical Association, American Society of Hematology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
