VENICE – Venice Golf And Country Club – one of Southwest Florida’s most prestigious private golf communities – is proud to announce General Manager Jim Schell has been chosen as a finalist for the 2013 Sustainability Best Practice Awards for his commitment to environmentally sound practices. Winners were announced at the Working on the Green Sustainability Summit luncheon on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at the Peabody Orlando.
Since 1990, Sustainable Florida, a program run by the Collins Center for Public Policy, has exhibited a firm commitment to improve Florida’s environment and economy. This marks the 16th year the non-profit organization handed out awards to businesses, organizations and individuals for their accomplishments and commitment to Florida’s long-term prosperity and overall environmental health.
A total of 51 nominees and 18 finalists ranging from major resorts and municipalities to large corporations, convention centers and more vied for awards in six categories: Leadership, Small Business, Large Business, Non-Profit, Partnership, and Green Building. Jim Schell, the General Manager of Venice Golf And Country Club, was nominated in the Large Business and Non-Profit categories and selected as a finalist in Leadership. An independent set of judges experienced and knowledgeable in the fields of sustainability, energy, engineering, green building, corporate social responsibility and government reviewed and scored each nomination. “I am truly honored to be recognized among some of the state’s biggest names in environmental awareness,” said Schell. “This achievement reinforces our ultimate commitment to creating a safer, healthier, higher quality of life for the people of our beautiful community.”
For over 11 years, Schell has committed his efforts to ensure that the community’s management of the environment has benefits that extend to the larger community outside the Club’s boundaries. This dedication helped Venice Golf And Country Club achieve certification as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in 2004, then continued with recognition by the international Golf Environment Organization (GEO) as “an outstanding example of environmentally sensitive golf” and a leader in sustainable environmental practices, both locally and internationally. The prestigious GEO Certified™ mark is widely endorsed as the most credible, comprehensive ecolabel for progressive properties that recognize the impact their golf courses have on the wider environment. The Venice Golf and Country Club is one of only five GEO Certified™ golf courses in the United States.
