County Library System Hosts Anniversary Events Sept. 27 - Oct. 4

MANATEE COUNTY – The Palmetto Library's 100th birthday, Rocky Bluff's 20th and 50 years of our countywide library system will all be celebrated at various anniversary events at Manatee County Library branches in coming weeks. A number of special events and programming will be offered in conjunction with the celebrations.

All events are free and seating will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Light refreshments will be served by the Friends of the Library. There is no advance registration required.

The Friends of the Rocky Bluff Library will host a special anniversary celebration event on Saturday, September 27, with an Open House.

Marking the 20th anniversary of service at Rocky Bluff Library, the Friends are pleased to present an entertaining video about the history of Rocky Bluff throughout the day. At 10:30 a.m., there will be a craft program for children and a drawing for a stuffed alligator from Build-a-Bear. At 2:00 p.m., there will be a musical event featuring the Tampa Taiko Drum troupe.

The Friends of the Central Library will host a special anniversary celebration event on Monday, September 29, 2014, with an Open House starting at 5:30 p.m.

Marking the 50th anniversary of the formation of the countywide library system, the Friends are pleased to welcome Cathy Slusser, who, along with librarian Pam Gibson will present a fascinating historical lecture and walking tour starting at 6:00 p.m.

The evening’s events will also include the unveiling of a new photo display, and there will be artifacts, scrapbooks and more on exhibit.

The Friends of the Island Branch Library will host a special anniversary celebration event on Tuesday, September 30.

Marking the 50th anniversary of the formation of the county-wide library system, the Friends welcome author Echo Heron who will talk about her writing.

The Friends of the Braden River Branch Library will host a special anniversary celebration event on Thursday, October 2, 2014.

Marking the 50th anniversary of the formation of the countywide library system, the Friends welcome the Braden River Historical Society along with the DeSoto Crewe; the organizations will offer a presentation from 2:00 through 4:00 p.m.

The Friends of the South Manatee Branch Library will host a special anniversary celebration event on Friday, October 3.

Marking the 50th anniversary of the formation of the countywide library system, the Friends welcome Robert Ryndress, who will present a lecture entitled “Breaking Ground” starting at 2:00 p.m. From 2:30-4:30 p.m., the “Jazz All Starts” will perform.

The Friends of the Palmetto Branch Library will host a special anniversary celebration event on Saturday, October 4. Marking the 100th anniversary of the Palmetto Library, there will be an open house from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a program of speakers starting at 11:30 a.m. One of the featured speakers is Judy Oakley, former Carnegie Librarian.

The Palmetto Branch Library is located at 923 6th Street West, Palmetto FL.

Special programs such as this are made possible by funds provided by the Friends of the Library. The Friends are a support organization for the Rocky Bluff Library. Monies raised by the Friends go toward projects and services that tax dollars alone cannot provide.
