David Charles Hicks, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2024 with his family at his side, just days shy of his 95th birthday. Born on November 30, 1929, in Lansing, Michigan to Earl and Alice Hicks. David was raised in Okemos, where he developed a strong work ethic and a deep connection to the land as a young farmer. It was during high school that he met the love of his life, Kitty Lou Dawe, while driving his favorite red Farmall tractor for a hayride she attended.

David and Kitty were married at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Lansing, Michigan, on June 15, 1952, and celebrated 72 years of a loving and devoted marriage. While stationed in the Navy in Rhode Island, they began their married life together, creating a foundation of love and partnership that would last a lifetime. This church became an integral part of their lives upon returning to Michigan, where they remained active members. David served on the board and contributed to various committees, including a highlight of implementing and growing the church's endowment fund, ensuring a lasting legacy for future generations.

In 1953, David and Kitty purchased a 50-acre farmhouse on Willoughby Road in Mason, Michigan, where they began raising their five children-Susan, Kathy, Randy, Roger, and Linda. This home became the heart of their family, filled with laughter and love, until the construction of Highway 127 prompted them to build a new house on Darling Road.

David began his career in the family dry cleaning business on MSU's campus in East Lansing, where he developed a commitment to serving others and enjoyed cheering on the Spartans. He later partnered with his father-in-law in the Vent Air awning business until 1962, when he shifted gears to pursue a successful career in real estate. He attended Lansing Business College and earned his real estate license. As the owner and broker of All Star Realty Company, David built a thriving business, expanding to four offices and employing 40 to 50 salespeople, all driving the classic '98 red Oldsmobiles that became synonymous with his brand. He was a lifetime member of the Lansing Board of Realtors, where he built lasting relationships in the community.

Summers were especially dear to David, as he began vacationing on Torch Lake with his in-laws and continued this cherished tradition with his own family. He loved cruising the lake in their family's 1957 Chris Craft, watching the sunsets over the water, and savoring every moment. Family time was filled with laughter, delicious hors d'oeuvres, and many happy hours. David and Kitty also enjoyed warm, sun-filled days in Bradenton, FL near their favorite beach on Anna Maria Island. David's favorite saying, "It doesn't get any better than this," perfectly captured his upbeat personality. He was always positive and his cup was half full as he saw the bright side of life every day. David had a unique ability to connect with everyone, effortlessly carrying on conversations and making friends wherever he went. As time went on, he and Kitty affectionately took on the nicknames "Deputy Dave" and "Miss Kitty," which reflected their playful spirit and enduring love.

David's legacy is one of love, resilience, and dedication to family and community. He will be remembered for his unwavering support, his kindness, and the countless memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him. He is survived by his loving wife, Kitty; his five children: Susan Hicks Rummery (Hal), Kathy Mueller (Stan), Randy Hicks (Jeanne), Roger Hicks (Leah), and Linda Hirt (Doug); 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are siblings: Nancy Clark, James Hicks (Pam), Richard Hicks, and brother-in-law Bud Dawe (Delpha-Jeanne). His impact will be felt for generations to come.

A celebration of David's life will be held next summer at Torch Lake.
