Dennis James Gergel Sr., age 78, passed away peacefully at home on March 16, 2026, in Bradenton, Florida.

Dennis was born in Sayre, Pennsylvania, and in 1980 made the move to Bradenton, Florida, with a simple but powerful goal—to provide his family with a better life. That decision reflected the kind of man he was: devoted, hardworking, and always putting the people he loved first. For 57 wonderful years, Dennis shared a deep and lasting love with his wife, Shirley (Miller) Gergel. Together they built a life filled with family, memories, and unwavering support for one another. His greatest pride was his family, and he found joy in watching them grow and thrive.

Dennis proudly signed up to serve his country in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 during the Vietnam War. During his service he was stationed in Thailand working in communications. Those who knew Dennis often said he had the heart of a lion—strong, courageous, and fiercely protective of the people he loved. His life was defined by his dedication to his family, his quiet strength, and the countless ways he showed up for those who mattered most.

Dennis had a passion for cars and music. He played the trumpet in high school as part of the Class of 1965 at Athens High School. Over the years he was proud of the cars he showed, including his Corvette and Porsche, and he especially loved his Cadillac Escalade. He also had a massive collection of Lionel trains, a hobby he greatly enjoyed. Dennis and Shirley also enjoyed visiting Disney together and often took road trips back to Pennsylvania, creating many cherished memories along the way.

He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Shirley (Miller) Gergel; his son, Dennis J. Gergel Jr.; his daughter, Suzanne (Gergel) Eisel and her husband, Aaron Eisel; his beloved grandson, Jeffrey Grolemund and his fiancé, Andrew Barnes; his Aunt, Catherine Capkovick; many nieces and nephews whom he was proud to watch grow up; and his beloved dogs, Max, Barbie, and Max, who brought him great joy. Dennis will be remembered for the love he gave, his sense of humor, the life he built, and the legacy of family he leaves behind. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
