Donald Leroy Sweitzer, 89, of Bradenton, Florida, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2026, at Lakewood Ranch Hospice House.
Don was born on September 8, 1936, in Lyons, Illinois. He obtained his GED in 1959 and proudly served his country for four years in the United States Army with the 23rd Infantry Division.
On September 7, 2002, Don married Marlys Acks, and together they made their home in Bradenton. Throughout his working life, Don was known for his strong work ethic and willingness to help others. He worked as a painting contractor, maintained the grounds at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, and later served as a courier for Manatee Diagnostic Center.
Don was an active and dedicated member of his community. He was a proud member of the local Moose Lodge and the Lions Club. He enjoyed working outdoors, staying busy, and spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, and his son, Scott Everingham.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Marlys Sweitzer of Bradenton; his children, Donnie (Sandie) Sweitzer of Indiana, Christine Melchi of Sarasota, Florida, Teresa (Robert) Clark of Lake View, Alabama, Michael Martinko of Winter Park, Florida, and Karyn (Don) Wilczynski of Apopka, Florida; his brother, Gene Sweitzer; his sister, Sandy Kolzow; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren, including Caleb Clark, Matthew (Crystal) Clark, Philip Clark, Daniel (Amanda) Clark, Kathleen Clark, Benjamin (Kaylin) Clark, Miranda (Jacob) Lee, Hannah (Brennan) Whitlock, and Rachel (Bailey) Hanner. He is also survived by Marlys’ daughters, Lorri Guy, Jamie Brock, Robin Acks, and Jody (Joe) Kemmerlin, along with several additional grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church 1805 30th Ave W, Bradenton, FL 34205. Interment will follow in the Bethel Baptist Church Memorial Garden. A reception for family and close friends will be held immediately afterward in the Bethel Baptist Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Bethel Baptist Church to support its many missionary service projects.
