A Time To Be Born: Mother Doris Lee Bussey Mays was Born on April 24, 1934, in Pahokee, Fl to the late Alonzo and Rosa Mae Bussey.
A Time to Plan : At a very early age, Doris and her family moved to Palmetto, Florida where she lived the remainder of her life. She attended schools in Manatee County and received her High School Diploma from Lincoln Memorial High School. Doris Completed Cosmetology School in Tampa, Florida and was the owner and operator of "Dot's Beauty Shop," for over 50 years.
A time to serve God: Doris accepted Christ at an early age under the leadership of the late Reverend Edmond at the St. Luke Primitive Baptist church of Palmetto, Fl. for over 80 years. She was a member of the choir, in charge of the Kitchen staff, and a member of the following boards Mother, Trustee and Mission. She also was the church secretary.
A time to give back to her community: Doris volunteered as a hairdresser at the Bradenton Convalescent Center and for the Hope Chest for Battered Women in Bradenton Florida for many years. She fed the community in which she lived during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays, serving over a hundred people yearly for many years. Doris was often called upon to serve on many occasions at church functions because she was not ashamed to show her love for the Lord. She was a dedicated wife, mother and a lover of her grandchildren whom she dedicated her life to making their lives a little easier. Instilling in them the sample principle she was taught as a child, "To know the Lord for Yourself and he will take care of you."
A Time To Love: Doris married her high school sweetheart Walter "Jody" Mays who preceded her in death and to this reunion they had one girl; Donna Maria Mays and 3 sons; Walter Mays Jr. who preceded her in death, Gary Leonard Mays, who preceded her in death and Myron Norbert Mays.
A Time to Transition: On October 11, 2025, God called his faithful servant Doris Lee Bussey Mays from labor to reward. Thank you, God, for the 91 years you allowed us to spend with our mother. She joins her mother and father, Alonzo and Rosa Mae, her husband Walter Sr., son Walter Jr. and Son Gary Leonard Mays.
Doris leaves to cherish her loving daughter Donna Maria Mays, one son Myron Norbert Mays (Cassandra), Grandchildren: Sandi-Mia Merkerson (Curtis), Krystal Mays, Rhonda McNeal, Towanya Mays, Shayla Mays, Gary Mays, Kimberly Mays, Jermaine Mays, Matthew Mays (Holley), Donnie (wife name), and Daisy. 16 great-grandchildren. Her caretaker Kellie Box and many other sorrowing relatives and friends.
