Earl J. "Jack" Koskela Jr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away at the age of 87 on September 27, 2025, at Tidewell Hospice LWR in Bradenton, Florida, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born on December 18, 1937, in Ironwood, Michigan, to the late Hilda Koivisto and Earl Koskela Sr., Jack was a beacon of kindness, wisdom, and creativity throughout his life.
Jack was a proud graduate of Berkley High School in Detroit, Michigan, and furthered his education by attending Michigan University. His commitment to serving his country was evident through his dedicated service as an Army Sergeant and National Guard Medic in Grayling, Michigan, from which he received an honorable discharge. Jack's discipline and dedication to service were hallmarks of his character and were admired by all who knew him.
A Christian, Jack lived his faith through his actions, always ready to lend a helping hand and offer a word of comfort. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and he leaves behind a loving wife, Dyane Koskela; his daughter Heather Koskela; stepdaughter Deborah McLellan; stepsons David and Michael Vanhoose; and his beloved grandchildren Cody, Cooper, and Victoria Vanhoose.
Jack's artistic talents were as vast as his heart. With hands both strong and gentle, he created intricate wood pieces, train, plane, and boat models that will serve as enduring reminders of his skill and passion. His love for the outdoors was ever-present as he tended to his garden and yard, finding peace and joy in the beauty of nature.
An avid boater and fisherman, Jack cherished time spent on the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico, where the water seemed to echo his sense of adventure and serenity. His competitive spirit shone through in his love for playing pool and golf, where he both challenged and delighted his companions with his skill and sportsmanship.
Jack's love for entertainment extended to collecting records and movies, which he enjoyed sharing with family and friends on his big movie screen. He was a devoted fan of his favorite football teams, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Detroit Lions, cheering them on with the same loyalty and enthusiasm he showed in all aspects of his life.
The words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded," resonates deeply with Jack's life philosophy. He touched many lives, making them brighter and fuller with his presence.
