SIESTA KEY – The Fiesta on Siesta Key, one of the largest collegiate sand volleyball competitions ever held, returns for its fifth year - April 12-14, 2013, in Siesta Key, FL. David Carstenson is the Competition Director and Tom Collett is the Media Relations Coordinator for the event.
“As sixteen schools are preparing to play in the 'Sweet 16' Round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship around the country, we already have a substantial number of coaches who have already committed to bring their teams to the beach next Spring on Siesta Key” said Fiesta co-director David Carstenson. He added: “the numbers are up, and if we had to play tomorrow, we’d have a fantastic field. With Sand volleyball now an NCAA Emerging Sport for women at the Division I level, the growth trend is upward.”
The format for the 2013 Fiesta on Siesta Key will differ from past years. Florida State University, Tulane and other institutions that have added Sand Volleyball programs are lining up to compete.
“The Fiesta will be a three-day event, with Sand Volleyball programs participating to fulfill their NCAA Sand scheduling requirements. So we had to add a second and third day,” said Carstenson. He added: “In previous years, many coaches who were proponents of beach or sand volleyball brought their indoor/court squads to Siesta Key on one of their Spring Indoor play dates.”
Sand Programs will compete in true NCAA Sand competition on Friday, April 12, and on Sunday, April 14. The schools with indoor/court programs will compete on Saturday, April 13th, along with the Sand Programs that choose to participate.
