BRADENTON - The 26th Annual Crosthwait Fishing Tournament, held May 15-17 at the Bradenton Yacht Club, was a big success, said 2009 chairman Malcolm Edwards on Tuesday.

While it was bumpy on May 16, a Saturday, there were 125 boats in the event. "It was a good turnout," Edwards said.
Occurring before the recent spate of rain, the weather was good and, in fact, was a little better than last year, Edwards said. The number of offshore boats went from six last year to 14 this year.
"The outstanding catch was a 41-inch snook that received 93 points," he said, and the largest offshore fish was a 90-point grouper.
A new award was presented honoring the late Jerry Hill, an outdoor writer for the Bradenton Herald. "He was always for conservation," Edwards said.
He's hoping for an even better tournament next year.
"We look forward to everybody's participation," he said. "We'd like to thank our sponsors for helping make it possible."
According to the tournament's Web site, "The Annual Crosthwait Memorial Fishing Tournament was established as an annual tribute to Col. Sam Crosthwait, to further his high ideals of sportsmanship and camaraderie among Florida West Coast Anglers."
