Gelene W. Listro (née Henley), aged 77, passed away on June 24, 2024, in Bradenton, FL. Born on September 16, 1946, in Des Moines, IA, she was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and a dedicated educator.
Gelene graduated from Indianola High School and furthered her education at Colorado Women's College, Simpson College and Drake University, where she earned her bachelor's and master's degrees respectively. She dedicated her career to special education, which started by teaching in Marquette, MI, Waterloo, IA, and Roselle, IL. In 1995, she became the Director of Special Services for District 58 in Downers Grove, IL, a role she passionately held until her retirement in 2004.
Known for her tremendous sense of humor and selflessness, Gelene made a significant impact on both her students and colleagues. Her love for teaching was paralleled by her devotion to her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored immensely. She and her husband, Michael, enjoyed their retirement years playing couples golf and traveling on cruises with friends.
Gelene is survived by her husband, Michael Listro; son, Brian Baldis (Natalie); stepchildren, Gwen Thompson (Scott), Natalie Listro; Kevin Listro (Irene); and grandchildren, Tyler and Blake Baldis; Kiera Thompson; Jacqueline and Loretta Listro. She was preceded in death by her brother, Bob Henley, and her parents, Frances (Mott) and Rick Henley.
