PALMETTO -- The Palmetto Rowing Team is a success story waiting to happen. The new Ft. Hamer training facility will not only bring some of college rowing's biggest names to our area and be a boon for the local economy, but it will also create amazing opportunities to introduce local students to this sport.

Not only will students have the chance to learn a challenging new sport, but they'll be exposed to a healthy lifestyle that will hopefully transcend their time as student athletes. Plus, those who excel at the sport have the benefit of those programs coming here for winter training, where coaches can easily scout local talent that might be good enough to secure a scholarship.

But outfitting a crew team is no small task and in these budget-strapped times, new funding is hard to come by. On Saturday, May 14, the PHS Rowing Club will be hosting a unique event to raise funds: The First Annual Palmetto High School Crew Chopper Dropper Fundraiser.

2,000 numbered golf balls will drop from a helicopter at Rive Isle Golf and Nautical Estates in Parrish. A $50 donation to the club gets you a ball. If yours lands closest to the pin, you win $25,000! Second and third prize is $5,000 and the next four closest win a grand!

Your ticket also includes a ticket to brunch at Rive Isle where you'll meet GLEE star Jane Lynch, who has been a generous supporter of the club since its inception. Email palmettocrew@gmail.com for more information or to get you tickets.
