Bradenton, Florida - Hyman S. Busch died on March 28, 2025, at the age of 103 years and 9 months in Bradenton, Florida. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and then moved with his family to Pennsylvania, where he graduated ROTC from Penn State. He served in World War II in the Pacific with the 77th Division, which saw combat in Guam, Leyte and Okinawa. He served in the occupation effort in Hokkaido and then returned home in 1946.
He and his first wife, Dorothy, then had one child. After the war, he was in the Army Reserves for seventeen years and retired with the rank of Major. He worked at NBC. Later, he worked for Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe for 25 years, where he became one of the Directors. During the course of his career, he was a supporter and mentor to many who worked at the Radio.
He was a great lover of the arts of all kinds, be it performance like ballet, theater, opera, or the visual arts. He enjoyed a good meal and lively discussion with friends and family. He travelled widely in Europe and the United States. He was a big believer in physical fitness and loved to golf, swim, ski, and work out. He had a beautiful singing voice and was known for his whistling.
He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Yetta, his brother, Irving, his sister, Marilyn, and his second wife of 53 years, Petra. He is survived by his daughter Barbara, grandson Ian (Louise), granddaughter Hannah, great granddaughter Giuliana, and many cousins and dear friends. To know him was to love him.
