QUANTICO, VA — In a lengthy and often meandering speech to the US Military's Generals and Admirals at a Marine base in northern Virginia on Tuesday, President Donald Trump defended his use of the armed forces to police American cities, fighting what he described as “the enemy within,” insisting he should be allowed to use military force domestically.

The enemy within in is sitting in the Whitehouse, surrounded by his cronies and all appointed to his Cabinet. We are at a scary and unprecedented time in our country. We must stand up for the Constitution, on which this country was founded....not a convicted felon, draft dodger and pedofile. When do we know he is lying? When he opens his mouth or goes on social media.

In their book How Democracies Die, authors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt examine the many countries in recent history where democracies have failed and where the attempts to topple democracy has been stopped. They list the necessary components to defeat would be dictators trying to turn democracy into authoritarianism. The common thread where such attempts have failed are cases where members of the autocrat's own party have stood up for the country's rule of law and against their party leader. Our system is teetering. We MUST have Republican leaders willing to stand up for democracy and say No to Donald Trump. Republicans lost a huge opportunity by not supporting Liz Cheney, but there is hope. Gutless Ted Cruz stood up for Jimmy Kimmel. Marjorie Taylor Green is starting to show some independence. It needs to happen at all levels.True leadership would be George Kruse and Tal Siddique showing up at a pro democracy rally like the No Kings II rally on October 18. Those two know what is happening - staging the military in US cities, indicting political enemies, going after the press, self enrichment - is an attack on our freedom and rule of law system. We need Republican leaders to grow a spine and stand up for our Constitution. Otherwise, our grandkids will grow up in a country where the 1st Amendment is no longer a model for the world.
