James "Jim" Hegarty of Warwick, NY and Bradenton, Fl. passed away in Bradenton on 2/24/25. Jim was a beacon of resilience and courage and will be sorely missed by his family and many friends. He was predeceased by his father, Jack, his mother, Ann, and his brother Francis. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Julie (nee Conway), his sister, Maura, his five nieces and two nephews.

Jim was born in Ashford, County Wicklow and came to the United States accompanied by his father when he was 16 years old. His mother, brother and sister soon followed and they lived near Princeton, NJ. When Jim was 17 years old, he joined the United States Army and was stationed in Huntsville, Alabama where he also took courses at the University of Alabama. After serving three years in the Army, he worked briefly in Wall Street. Jim joined the New York City Police Department in 1968 beginning his career on patrol at the 40th Precinct. While in the police department, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He quickly rose through the ranks and was promoted to Deputy Chief in October 2000. Jim was awarded the Medal of Valor for his bravery and extraordinary life saving actions on 9/11. He saved many lives before the towers fell despite being injured himself. Jim's heroism shone brightly on that tragic day and his legacy within the NYPD remains an inspiration to all who wear the badge. He was a true police hero.

Beyond his professional accolades, Jim's life revolved around his love for his wife Julie and his love for the game of golf. He found immense joy and camaraderie as a member of The Links at Union Vale and the Gaelic Golf Club. Jim lived a life of purpose and love and had many, many friends in Warwick, Bradenton and throughout the US and Ireland. He kept in touch with them on a regular basis. He had a genuine concern for others and always went out of his way to help in any way he could. His departure leaves a void, but the memories and lessons he has imparted will forever resonate with those who knew and loved him. Rest In Peace Jim.
