Joann Brown Charlton, a Bradenton native and beloved teacher passed away leaving behind a legacy of deep family love, church service, community dedication, and lifelong friendships.
Born and raised in Bradenton, Florida, Joann was a true hometown girl whose roots and heart never strayed far from the place she loved. She is a 1952 Manatee High School Grad, where she made her mark as a member of the school’s very first Drill Team. She also brought energy and enthusiasm to the sidelines as a popular Cheerleader, encouraging her team and uplifting those around her with her vibrant personality. Joann & husband Keith raised 3 beautiful daughters: Amy Lynn, Dianne & Kenni Sue.
Joann is supported by a large extended family, early pioneers, first arriving in Manatee County in the 1880’s. Her Grandfather & 3 Great-uncles & families were builders & leaders of The First Baptist Church of Bradenton, located at Manatee Ave & 13th St. West.
As a Manatee County Elementary School teacher of over 30 years, Joann will be remembered for her enduring love of her hometown, her joy in teaching the children and serving in her church.
Joann & her sister Patsy Brown Windham, rotated in all Manatee County Elementary Schools for 19 years, serving gratis, assisting school nurses doing hearing, vision & Scoliosis screening. It was a much needed and rewarding process, benefiting hundreds of young children.
Joann & Keith often hosted large gatherings for extended family. Pool parties, Mullet fish-fry’s, Easter & Christmas gatherings, have blessed many with wonderful memories of fun events.
As First Baptist Church was renovated 1998-2002, Joann & Patsy graciously served during the arduous project, leading the Stained-Glass restoration process. A small group of volunteers rebuilt 162 delicate stained glass window panels. This was a huge commitment, taking many daily hours over a 2-year period.
Her presence was one of kindness, loyalty, and quiet strength—qualities that left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
