Kay R. Scanlon

Posted

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 5, 1938, Kay was the eldest of five children born to Albert and Kay Reidy. She spent her early years in Massachusetts before beginning a remarkable life journey with the love of her life, Frank “Franny” Scanlon, her devoted husband of 67 years.

Together, Kay and Frank built a life centered on family, faith, adventure, and community. Over the course of their marriage, they traveled to all seven continents and all 50 states.

Kay’s professional life reflected both her intelligence and leadership. She concluded her career as Director of Human Resources for Homedco and retired to Bradenton, Florida where she spent the last 31 years of her life.

A devout Catholic, Kay was deeply involved in community parishes. Her faith was not simply something she practiced, but something she lived. She generously volunteered as a a Pre-Cana counselor, Catechism teacher, served with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, worked with the Prison ministry and acted as a Eucharistic Minister. Among the ministries closest to her heart was bringing communion to the sick and homebound.

Kay also dedicated herself to her Perico Bay community, serving in many volunteer leadership roles over the years. She was especially proud of her service as Board President.

She had a gift for making people feel cared for, whether through a handwritten card, a home-cooked meal delivered during difficult times, or an open seat at her holiday table for anyone who might otherwise be alone.

Kay passed away peacefully on May 13, 2026, in Bradenton, Florida.

In addition to her beloved Franny, Kay leaves behind her five daughters: Kelly Connell, Cheryl Davis, Annemarie Harthun, Laura Sullivan, and Ellen Herrick; her twelve cherished grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Janet Hoban and Karen Lema.

She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Albert Reidy; her sister, Joan Creighton; and her granddaughter, Carey Davis.

A memorial service will be held at Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles Catholic Church in Bradenton on June 6th at 10 AM.
