SARASOTA -- The Sons of the American Revolution, Saramana Chapter honored Eagle Scout, Jerrod Michael Styrk during their luncheon on Friday, January 14 at the Holiday Inn on Lido Key, Sarasota.  Styrk received his Eagle at a Court of Honor this past December 2010 at the 1st United Methodist Church, 603 11th St. W. in downtown Bradenton. In the picture below Stryk is shown receiving his Eagle rank credentials from another Eagle Scout, Al Hegener, now the Eagle Scouts program chairman for Saramana Chapter, FLSSAR.

Unfortunately, Styrk, now 19 was unable to personally attend the January Saramana luncheon as he was obliged to return to his classes at The Citadel Military College in South Carolina. He was represented by his mother, Nancy Styrk who accepted the SAR Certificate of Recognition and the $600 Eagle Scout Scholarship check from the Saramana Chapter. He was also represented by his Scoutmaster of Troop 8, Kenneth Settlemyer, who read Stryk's original essay, "A Standard too High," which was received with a standing ovation by the persons present.

Eagle Scout Styrk is one of two sons born to Randy and Nancy Styrk of Parrish. His brother is a Lance Corporal serving with the U.S. Marines. He was a 2010 graduate of Bayshore High School, Bradenton. He was a three year member of their JROTC cadet program, named as "Best Company Commander" as one of the five awards on his Sons of the American Revolution Eagle Scout Scholarship Application. He accumulated 29 Merit Badges during his scouting career, only 21 are required for consideration of Eagle rank. In addition, he held the Order of the Arrow. His Eagle project was the creation of a Butterfly Garden.
