BRADENTON — Under the spotlight at a sold-out theater, local troubadour Rob Garcia belts out a song that has the audience leaning forward, hanging on every note. For Venice, FL residents, Garcia has become a familiar face at local venues. However, his roots in rock’s golden era are being recognized through a rock history book and an upcoming documentary.
Garcia, who first rose in the hard-edged Jersey club scene, is featured in Jersey Metal: A History of the Garden State’s Heavy Metal Scene, Volume One. That connection brought him to Newark, NJ, earlier this year, where he was interviewed on film by the book’s authors, Alan Tecchio and Frank White, alongside documentarian Jason Stewart.
The interview stretched for three hours, diving into the stories, music, and energy that defined
that era.
"I don’t know what footage makes the final cut,” Garcia says of Stewart's upcoming doc. “The real takeaway is proof that rock’s community spirit never died.”
“When I saw my old band Wenlock appear in the book, it felt like vindication,” Garcia said. “After all the crazy clothes, the ridicule, and the one-night Rock ‘n’ Roll stands, someone noticed. Someone cared. You have to remember, this was 1980, maybe 1981. The real “movement”…the look, the transformation had not really made it to the ground level at that time. Very few bands looked or played like that yet. The scene was still kinda stodgy and very 'top 40.' In the early ’80s, in nightclubs when live music ruled weekends, Rock 'n' Roll lived in the dark before MTV changed everything and blew it up into a caricature of itself.”
On September 26, Garcia will bring his one-man acoustic rock show to Langdon Theater in
Port Charlotte, continuing his mission to keep live rock vibrant in the community. Tickets for the
Langdon Show are available at: WWW.RGSOLOACT.COM/Tickets.
“Rock isn’t dead,” Garcia says. “It's time in the sun burned bright for the masses, but now it’s back in the cliques with the cool kids. It’s something special again, not for everyone. But for the people, it is for? Its spirit is on par with the religious.”
