PORT MANATEE — A major crude oil spill at Port Manatee is under investigation after being reported to the United States Coast Guard on Friday. Crews worked through the weekend to remove nearly 15,000 gallons of oil-slicked water.
The source of the spill and the party responsible are still under investigation according to the Coast Guard. Oil booms were placed into the water on Friday and at least 15 tons of oily debris had to be removed.
On Friday, an oil boom more than a thousand feet long was able to remove roughly 4,500 gallons of the pollution. On Saturday, another 3,000 gallons were removed. On Sunday, an update to the U.S. Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg's social media noted that crews cleared another 7,200 gallons from the port.
