Posted

JUPITER – The Marauders (28-31) split a doubleheader with the Hammerheads (30-34) on Monday night at Roger Dean Stadium. Bradenton fell 4-1 in game one, then dispatched Jupiter by the same score in game two. The game one loss officially eliminated the Marauders from contention for a playoff berth.

The Hammerheads put runners on in every inning of the first game, finally breaking through against Robby Rowland (L, 4-11) in the fourth inning on an RBI-single by Austin Nola to plate Sharif Othman. Jupiter used three hits and some shaky Bradenton defense to score three more runs and take a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning. Rowland surrendered all four runs, only two of which were earned.

Jacob Esch (W, 2-9) turned in a second straight strong start against the Marauders in game one. The former Georgia Tech shortstop limited Bradenton to one unearned run on a Stetson Allie sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. Florida State League saves leader Nick Wittgren picked up his 25th save in the seventh.

The Marauders scored first and last in game two. Allie delivered another sacrifice fly in the first inning against starter Kevin Cravey. With the game tied 1-1 in the fourth, Samuel Alvis took over on the mound to make his High-A debut for Jupiter. Alvis walked Elias Dias leading off the inning. A sacrifice bunt attempt by Dan Gamache resulted in two men aboard when a throw to second didn’t quite get Diaz. Jose Osuna bunted the two runners over. A walk to Taylor Lewis loaded the bases for Carlos Mesa, who gave Bradenton the lead for good with a sacrifice fly. D.J. Crumlich followed with a double to plate two and close the scoring.

Bradenton sent Joan Montero (W, 4-6) to the mound on two days rest for a spot start in game two. Montero responded by tossing five innings to win his second spot start of the season. Montero struck out two and walked one, while allowing just a first-inning run. Zac Fuesser recorded the final six outs for his third save.

Game three of the series will be played Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. Joely Rodriguez will be on the mound for the Marauders against Jose Urena for the Hammerheads. The game will be broadcast online at www.BradentonMarauders.com.
