Mary E. Uhrig, aged 92, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025, in Bradenton, Florida.
Mary was born on March 14, 1932, in Manhattan, New York. After the loss of her mother (Catherine) at an early age, she was raised on Staten Island by her father (Roy) and sister (Gladys), alongside her nieces and nephews, who considered her a sibling throughout her life.
Mary met her husband (Walter), and they were married in 1952 before he was stationed in San Diego as a Naval photographer. Throughout the following years, they raised their family on Staten Island, spending summers in Forked River, New Jersey. Mary earned her LPN and worked in the psychiatric unit of St. Vincent's for over 25 years. After her retirement in 1997, Mary and Walter embraced the lifestyle of typical "snowbirds" enjoying summers in Forked River, and heading south for the colder months in Bradenton, Florida.
Generosity was at the heart of Mary's character. Walter passed in 2006, and in the years following, Mary consistently opened her tidy, organized home to visitors. She always had ice cream money cleverly stored in a charming creamer pitcher for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her love for Ralph's Ice was well-known, and summer days were often filled with laughter as she treated her loved ones to sweet treats.
Mary found great happiness in sewing, using her skills to create meaningful memories for her granddaughters by attaching their Girl Scout badges and tailoring dance recital costumes for the perfect fit. She thrived on staying active, often seen in the kitchen whipping up simple meals and desserts. Mary will be lovingly remembered for her exceptional gift-wrapping skills, which showcased her thoughtfulness.
Her carefully crafted presents, adorned with curly ribbons, not only reflected her love but also extended the joy and anticipation of the unwrapping experience.
As an avid fan of General Hospital, Mary made it a point to tune in every afternoon to watch her "story." She also had a fondness for David Muir on World News, appreciating his insightful reporting and the calm presence. Her daily routine brought her joy, especially the peaceful moments spent watching the sunrise with a warm cup of coffee in hand.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Walter, daughter Lorrie (Charlie), and great-granddaughter Genevieve. She leaves behind her two daughters: Evelyn (Steve), and Eva (Jim); seven grandchildren: Melissa, Hope (Chris), Sara (Rory), Stevie, Chelsea, Jimmy, and Breanna; and six great-grandchildren: Gabriel, Liam, Lucas, Aiden, Joanie, and Nicholas. She'll be missed dearly by many additional nieces, nephews, loved ones, and friends.
Mary will be buried next to her husband Walter at the Veterans Administration Cemetery in Sarasota, Florida. There is nothing formal at this time, but a celebration of her life will take place in the future. May her memory bring comfort to all who loved her. In the words of Mary "Bye, bye now."
