Michael Miles, known to most of his friends as Mike, was born on June 13, 1943, in Halifax, England, and departed this life on July 21, 2026, in Bradenton, Florida, after fighting a battle which he sadly lost against pneumonia.
He lived a life marked by wit, courage, determination, and good cheer, and he was a man whose presence could lighten a room and whose steadfast spirit could steady it. Those who knew him best remember a soul both funny and optimistic, often with a glass of Merlot in his hand, he was a spirited conversationalist whose laughter often came before him and whose ideals remained long after he had gone.
He was raised in England and studied in Crawley, where he laid the foundation for a life of remarkable diligence and achievement. In 1971, he qualified as a Chemical Engineer, a distinction earned by perseverance and keen intellect. From humble beginnings, he ascended by merit and resolve, beginning his working life as an office tea boy and rising through the ranks to become Chief Chemical Engineer at Acalor Limited, an English company where his skill and devotion were well regarded. His story was one of honest labor and upward striving, a testament to what may be accomplished by one who meets each duty with discipline and grace.
Yet Michael was not content merely to serve in the work of others. With enterprise in his heart and vision in his mind, he founded his own industrial flooring company in the United Kingdom named Ab-Chem Limited, building not only a business but a legacy of craftsmanship and determination. He later retired to Florida at the age of 45, where he embraced a new chapter beneath warmer skies, carrying with him the same energy and curiosity that had guided him through the years. Even through his so-called retirement, he was developing and flipping houses. He remained drawn to building and construction projects, ever eager to shape, mend, and improve the world around him with his own hands and practical wisdom.
In his personal life, Michael was blessed with family, and family was a great treasure to him. He was the beloved husband of Patricia Miles, who has preceded him in death. Together they shared the bonds of marriage and the joys and trials that make a life whole. He was an inspiration to his three sons, Graeme, Stephen, and Darren, and to his daughter, Lisa. He was also a proud grandfather to five grandchildren, in whom he found delight and from whom he received the enduring reward of his years. His family knew him as a man of humor and warmth, one whose spirit could be both playful and strong, and whose love was expressed not always in a grand speech but in steadfast presence and loyal care.
Michael’s interests reflected the practical nature of his character. He loved football and being a lifelong supporter of Brighton and Hove Albion, he followed the English team from his days from living in Brighton and Hove. He was always interested in building and construction projects, finding satisfaction in the shaping of materials and the bringing forth of useful things from raw beginnings, especially if it meant making a small profit before moving onto the next.
He also enjoyed socializing, for he valued company, conversation, and often played chess with Tyler his granddaughter. He would love to give advice to Tiffany about life, boyfriends and her new house. He loved his chats with them both. He was the sort of man who could speak with ease in any situation, listen with interest, and leave others feeling better for having known him. His optimism was not a shallow brightness, but a hardy and enduring light, one that he endured, even when the road grew difficult.
Now he rests in peace, and though his passing leaves sorrow in the hearts of those who loved him, his memory remains a bright and living thing. He has gone from the fields of labor and the warmth of familiar faces, yet the measure of his life endures in the family he cherished, the work he accomplished, and the many lives he touched with his humor and spirited nature. Like one of his own rounded red wines - his journey was shaped by effort, knowledge and resolve, and though the final curtain has fallen, the echo of his presence will be with us forever.
Let Michael Miles be remembered with gratitude and affection, for he was a man who made his way with purpose, who loved his family and friends, and who bore himself with a cheerful heart. In the story of his days, there is much to admire: the rise from modest beginnings being married to the love of his life Patricia. They will now be reunited in spirit and laid to rest in the Pyecombe village church grounds, adjacent to the last house they owned in England.
He had the courage to build a new life here in Florida, with the gift of a lively and hopeful spirit. Though death has claimed him, remembrance shall keep him near, and in the hearts of those who knew him and loved him as Mike, Dad, Grandad, Gramps and Poompa, his memory shall remain forever funny, driven, and spirited. We will always remember him as an unforgettable inspiration to us all.
