SARASOTA – After helping injured athletes return to the playing fields or courts of their respective sports for more than 20 years, Gary S. Shapiro, MD has branded the sports medicine side of his orthopedic practice at Kennedy-White. The specialty practice will be known as Shapiro Sports Medicine.

“It’s been an incredible honor to have injured athletes place their trust in me for their care,” Dr. Shapiro stated upon making the announcement. “Throughout my training and professional career, I have always strived to help athletes maintain optimum health and peak performance. I understand how it feels to love what you do and desire to deliver your best every day – whether on the playing field or in the OR.”

For more than two decades Doctors Gary Shapiro and colleagues from his Sarasota-based orthopedic practice, Kennedy-White, have provided a free community service to high school athletic programs by serving as team physician. This means being on the sidelines for weekly football games and other sporting events to protect players from injury and immediately assess and treat injured student athletes. Dr. Shapiro has also served as a high school baseball official and coach for a number of years. According to Sarasota High School Assistant Athletic Coach Mark Aschenbrenner, “His dedication has been absolutely selfless. Not only does he make sure our players are safe and ready to play for each game, but he has sacrificed many a Friday night standing on the sidelines of our home football games serving as our team doctor.”

As a demonstration of his commitment to the highest possible quality care, Dr. Shapiro has voluntarily participated in the rigorous process of board certification from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery since he started to practice. Earlier this year, Dr. Shapiro earned his second re-certification in Orthopedic Surgery from the ABOS. He has been board certified in orthopedic surgery with the prestigious institution since 1995.
