Todd Timmerman |
TAMPA – Former Jesuit High School football player Todd Timmerman never knew at the time how instrumental he would be in creating one of the most well-known football games in America.
Timmerman, an attorney at Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP in Tampa, is also The Outback Bowl Vice Chair for Pinellas County; however, his involvement in the Bowl goes back to the very beginning. “I represented the Bowl Association in putting together the original contract for Outback to become the name sponsor of the Bowl,” said Timmerman.
That was back in 1995. Timmerman was the Shumaker attorney that was involved in the negotiations and wrote the agreement. Now, Outback is the longest running title sponsor of any Bowl Game in the country. “Looking back, I am very proud to have been involved in one of the best things to happen to Tampa,” said Timmerman. “Outback is a tremendous partner, and the Bowl brings such great name recognition. Over the years, the Bowl has contributed more than $100 million to education, and we estimate the economic impact to the Tampa Bay region to be more than $1 billion. That impact comes from hotel rooms booked, restaurants and malls visited, you name it - not to mention the fact that Tampa Bay is all over the TV on New Year’s Day. That kind of publicity is priceless,” he noted.
Back in the early days of the Bowl, the game was known as the Hall of Fame Bowl and kicked-off its first game in Tampa Stadium with Boston College and Georgia. Today Timmerman’s duties mainly consist of selecting the teams to play, reaching out to businesses and potential sponsors, spreading the word and goodwill of the Bowl, and helping to make bigger policy decisions about direction of the Bowl.
