July 16, 1982 – July 23, 2024

Born on July 16, 1982, in San Diego, CA, Nickolaus Jay Buffat had a way of making the world brighter simply by being in it. A man of many contrasts and complexities, he was at once fiercely protective and gentle, adventurous and grounded, guarded and deeply loving.

Despite a difficult upbringing, Nick grew up to become a resilient and witty force of nature whose towering 6'5" frame and wall of muscles were no match for the light and laughter he brought into every room. Those who knew him best would tell you that he made life feel like an adventure – full of playful banter, mischievous schemes, and an ever-present sense of wonder and joy.

Nick was also profoundly introspective, with a mind that delighted in exploring the mysteries of the universe. From psychology to quantum physics and astronomy to world politics, his curiosity knew no bounds. He was as likely to be found debating a provocative idea as he was admiring the works of Miró or Bosch, building a bonfire, dominating at chess, or rewiring a friend's sound system to share the intricate music from a favorite artist or the soundtrack to a childhood video game with perfect, Nick-approved acoustics.

Nick's adventurous spirit carried him across the globe, from living in Kuala Lumpur and Geneva after graduating from the University of California San Diego, to sharing meals with local families during his many trips to Thailand, Vietnam, Paris, Victoria, Mexico, and Rome, just to name a few. Yet no matter where he went, Point Loma was always home, where he transformed a liveaboard sailboat into his uniquely personalized sanctuary of warmth and creativity, surrounded by the people and places he loved most.

Nick spent many of his years bartending in San Diego, most notably at Uptown Tavern, where he cultivated lasting friendships and dreamed of carving a path that would align with his inquisitive nature and intellect. He cherished meaningful conversations with long-time patrons and newcomers alike, and he enjoyed pushing boundaries with his sharp sense of humor to ensure those around him shared his zest for life and aversion to anger. And although he didn't always say it out loud, he genuinely valued and looked out for the people who passed his tests and stayed by his side.

Nick is survived by his chosen family, including (but certainly not limited to) Tyler Palmer, whom he saw as a little brother, and the rest of the Palmer clan, as well as Miguel Duran, a steadfast friend who supported him during difficult times and never shied away from giving him honest advice. He is also survived by Jaime Collins, who adored and believed in him wholeheartedly and will always see him as her best friend, partner in crime, her person, and her soulmate. Their love, which was kind, balanced, forgiving, and fun, was a lighthouse in both of their lives.

Nick's passing leaves an immeasurable void, but those who remain will continue to fight for justice on his behalf, and his legacy of warmth, laughter, loyalty, and compassion will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. In his honor, let us live as he did: curious, playful, and deeply connected to one another.

You are and will always be our family, Whale King. You taught us what it means to belong, and you are unconditionally and forever loved.
