Norman D. Smith, known affectionately as Norm to his friends and family, passed away suddenly on July 19, 2025, at the age of 76. Norm was a beacon of joy and kindness in the lives of those around him. Born on September 8, 1948, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. Norm's early years were filled with the warmth of a close-knit family. Norm's dedication to his family was unmatched. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Pamela Smith, his son Chris Smith, and his daughter-in-law Lori. The light of his life was his grandson, Christopher Smith, with whom he shared his love for the outdoors and sports. He will also be remembered by his brother, Edward Smith and his wife Joy, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will miss his humor and guidance. Norm was preceded in death by his father, Edward G. Smith, and mother, June Smith, Grandparents Olga and George Smith and Laben and Catherine Huff all of whom instilled in him the values of love and kindness that he carried throughout his life.
Norm's educational journey began at Morristown High School in New Jersey (where he earned varsity letters in Football, Track and Swimming), continued at Bordentown Military Institute, and culminated with a Physical Education Degree from the University of Pittsburgh (4 years on the football team). His passion for sports and education led him to develop the Work/Study Program at Hershey High School in Pennsylvania. He then went on to become a beloved Physical Education teacher in Middle Township School system in Cape May County, New Jersey, where he coached high school football and track teams. His commitment to youth and sports extended to his coaching of the community swim team in Cape May and his 20 years of proud service with the cape May Beach Patrol. A man of many talents, Norm earned his US Coast Guard Captain's License, which allowed him to captain boats for offshore fishing tournaments, combining his love for the sea with his competitive spirit. Norm's Christian faith provided him with strength and compassion that he shared generously with others. Norm's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He was an avid football fan, cheering on both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His love for car racing led him to work security at the Grand Prix in St. Petersburg for a decade. Norm was also an avid follower of Drum and Bugle Corp competitions, and he enjoyed watching local scholastic sports teams. Above all, he cherished spending time with his family and many friends, sharing laughter and creating wonderful memories. Those who knew Norm will remember him as a funny, loving, and kind man who brought light into every room he entered. His legacy will live on in the many lives he touched through his work, his community involvement, and his unwavering love for his family. Norm loved his retired life in Bradenton, Florida, where he spent his final years basking in the sun and embracing the coastal life he so loved. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of his loved ones, but his spirit will continue to guide and inspire them. Norm's life was a testament to the power of laughter, the strength of love, and the importance of kinship.
He will be deeply missed but forever remembered as a man who lived life to the fullest, with a smile on his face and love in his heart. Norm was a lifetime member of the Elks.
