BRADENTON — A bill that would allow citizens to register online to vote in Florida likely won't see a vote this year after Sen. Jeff Clemens (D-Lake Worth) pulled the bill this week. SB 784 would have allowed Internet sign-ups for both first time voters and those making changes to their registration.
With strong Republican opposition, the bill's chances were already slim. A companion bill in the House has likewise gone nowhere. A broader Senate bill that also included online voter registration, SB 1660, has also seemed to stall out.
Passing in at least one committee would have created a possibility for it to be added to another bill as an amendment. 19 states currently offer some form of online voter registration.
