Organized by the Bradenton Kiwanis Club, Christmas in August brings together more than 20 local agencies to help meet the back-to-school needs of over 400 local students. Children who attend the event receive free backpacks; school supplies; gift cards for clothes, shoes and haircuts; as well as medical, dental and eye screenings and immunizations. There are also a host of fun activities and games at the event along with face painting, food and drinks.

Using its contacts with text book vendors National Geographic/Cengage Learning, and Scholastic, as well as its own resources, the Manatee District amassed the more than 1,000 books for distribution to the students. The books – geared for students ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade – were delivered to the Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County which is sorting the books so they can be given to students on an age appropriate basis.

“I want to thank the vendors, district staff members and the Early Learning Coalition for their efforts in this worthy cause,” said Superintendent Rick Mills. “The Bradenton Kiwanis Club does an excellent job of organizing this event to get our students ready for the start of a new school year. We are very happy to take part in Christmas in August.”
