BRADENTON -- A pair of early homers powered the Palm Beach Cardinals (40-46, 11-7) to a 6-2 win over the Marauders (32-54, 6-12) on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. Ryan Sherriff (W, 2-2) delivered seven stellar innings to power the Cardinals to victory.

A two-run homer by David Popkins in the first inning off Orlando Castro (L, 1-1) staked the Cardinals to a 2-0 lead. It was the fourth homer of the season for the June TOPPS Player of the Month for the Florida State League. Anthony Garcia hit his 12th homer, a solo shot, later in the inning.

The Marauders only rally against Sherriff came in the third. Carlos Mesa reached second on a single and an overthrow. He scored on a double by Taylor Lewis down the first base line. Lewis stole third and scored on an errant throw to trim the Cardinals lead to 3-2. Seven different Marauders hit safely in the game.

Palm Beach extended the lead to 4-2 with an RBI-single from Starling Rodriguez in the third. Castro gave way to Matt Benedict in the fourth inning. Benedict pitched three innings and Ryan Beckman pitched two. Each surrendered one run. Iden Nazario retired the final six Marauders in order for his second save.

Game two of the series will be played Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. Adrian Sampson will start for the Marauders against Hector Hernandez of the Cardinals. The game will be broadcast online at www.BradentonMarauders.com.
