Palmetto Youth Center's Annual MLK Celebration Weekend

PALMETTO – The Palmetto Youth Center will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Weekend beginning Friday, Jan 13, and continuing through Sunday, Jan 15.

The Palmetto Youth Center invites members of the community to join them for a weekend full of entertainment and to embrace unity in the community.

"We are excited to rejuvenate our MLK Weekend," said Executive Director Reggie Bellamy in a press release.


The weekend celebration was preceded by the annual oratorical contest which was held on Thursday evening, Jan 5, in the Eddie Shannon Building. Students from Manatee County middle and high schools were invited to participate.

On Friday, Jan 13, the MLK Banquet will be held in the Seymore Sailes Gymnasium highlighting the finalist panel of the oratorical contest. The banquet will feature a catered dinner and a live band. Doors open at 6:00 p.m., with the event beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased through Eventbrite by clicking here.

At noon on Saturday, Jan 14, the MLK Weekend Parade will take off from the parking lot of Lincoln Middle School, located at 305 17th St E, Palmetto. The entry point of the parade will be on 2nd Avenue East at the first gate entering the parking lot, and the parade route will head west down 17th Street.

The MLK Weekend Youth Talent Show will begin at 3:00 p.m. in the Seymore Sailes Gymnasium after the conclusion of the parade. Admission to the event is $5.00 per person, with children five years and under free. The talent show will focus on dancers, musicians, singers, poets and other talents.

"We anticipate great talent with great fun," shared Executive Director Bellamy.


Finally, on Sunday, Jan 15, at 6:00 p.m. the Palmetto Youth Center will present the Multicultural Gospel Explosion, hosted by Mareneo Flournoy. The Gospel Explosion is a Sunday Service you will not want to miss!
