Petition Threshold Met for Reproduction Rights Referendum

Supreme Court review set for next month

Posted

BRADENTON — The League of Women Voters recently announced that valid petitions registered with the state for the "Amendment to Limit Government Interference with Abortion" initiative have surpassed the threshold for inclusion on the 2024 ballot.

The total number of petitions was 911,169 as of Tuesday. That is nearly 20,000 more than were required. Fourteen congressional districts are required to collect more than 8% of the number that voted in the last presidential election.  Manatee County was number 14, with three more congressional districts having broken that barrier since.

A review of the amendment by the Florida Supreme Court is next. The high court must determine that the referendum addresses a single subject and does not violate the US constitution. Oral arguments are scheduled for Feb 7 at 9 a.m.

Attorney General Ashley Moody filed with the Florida Supreme Court filing her contention that the proposed state constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights is too vague to go before the voters and would take away the state’s power to intervene.
