SARASOTA — Urbanite Theatre opened 2026 with a bang, presenting the regional premiere of Max Wolf Friedlich's Job.
Jane is on mandatory leave from her Big Tech job after a workplace meltdown goes viral. She's determined to get back to work, but first must be declared ready by her assigned therapist, Loyd.
Casey Wortmann, who impressed Urbanite fans in No One is Forgotten (review), returns to give a rivetingly intense performance as Jane, a proudly type-A go-getter who obsesses over her mentally grueling job of scanning a tech platform for inappropriate and/or illegal content.
Wortmann maintains an unthinkable level of intensity throughout the scorching, drum-tight 89-minute, no-intermission production, deftly bringing to life a complex character whose trauma becomes a living, breathing third character in the play.
Making his long-awaited Urbanite debut, Asolo Rep legend David Breitbarth perfectly offsets Wortmann's manic energy with a calmly measured demeanor that is equally gripping. The chemistry between the two actors is paramount to the production's considerable appeal.
Job is a prescient examination of modern online life wrapped in a deeply engaging psychological thriller that will have audiences on the edge of their seats until the curtain drops. The heart of theater season has just begun, but Job is already a strong contender for the best play of the year.
Job runs through February 15. Visit Urbanite’s website for more information.
