When Dick was eight years old, his mother, Margaret Denton Pomeroy, died in a car accident. His father Ewing Pomeroy then married Nellie Gray. Ewing Pomeroy was a golf professional, and they moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where they lived in Ansley Park while Ewing served as the golf professional at Ansley Park Golf Club.

Ewing was later offered a position at Lakewood Golf Club in Point Clear, Alabama, at The Grand Hotel. It was there that Dick met Patsy, and they were married in 1967.

Trane moved the family from Mobile, Alabama, to Newport News, Virginia, and then, in 1979, to Bradenton, Florida, where they made their home for the remainder of their lives.

Dick inherited the golf gene and loved the game. He was active at Bradenton Country Club, where he was known for his accomplishments as Club Putting Champion and Senior Champion, and he enjoyed many rounds with his golfing buddies.
