Richard Gendron

Richard "Dick" Albert Gendron passed away on August 2, 2025, in Bradenton, FL, at the age of 80. Born in Exeter, NH, in 1945, Dick made sure anyone who met him left with a good story and, if they were lucky, a new nickname.

Dick served his country proudly as a Marine, then traded in his fatigues for a badge. Graduating from the NH Police Academy in 1978, Dick spent his career in law enforcement across 3 small towns in southern NH. He was a decorated Juvenile Officer, Sargeant, Lieutenant, and Chief. Dick found real purpose in his work-not just enforcing the law, but helping people, guiding those who'd lost their way, and offering a hand (and often a wisecrack) to anyone who needed it.

He was a mentor to countless young people, both inside and outside the department, and he changed lives for the better just by believing in folks who needed someone in their corner. He retired in 2009 as the Chief of Police in Stratham, NH. His legacy of service and encouragement still echoes throughout the community.

At home, with his wife Barbara by his side, Dick was the kind of dad (and Pepe) who always found time for family-usually slipping in a joke, some good advice, or both. He leaves behind a legacy in his children-David, Traci Sloan, and his late daughter Michelle Woodworth, who we're sure was first to welcome him home. He is survived by 10 grandkids and 6 great-grandkids, each of whom inherited some combination of his big heart and mischievous grin.

Dick was a man of simple pleasures: fishing, hunting, and laughing with friends he treated like brothers. The outdoors was his happy place, unless there was a "Godfather" marathon on or a family game night to stir up. He could find common ground with anyone-neighbors, newcomers, even the occasional telemarketer.

Above all, Dick lived with integrity, humor, and faith (and occasionally patience, which anyone who ever followed his "shortcut" through the woods will confirm). While his absence leaves a mighty void, his stories-and the example he set-will continue for generations.

So, here's to Dick: a devoted husband, father, Pepe, chief, mentor, and friend. We'll miss him at the table, in the boat, and anywhere people gather for a laugh or a little guidance. His watch may be over, but in the words of his beloved "Godfather," we'll remember: "It's not personal. It's strictly family." And Dick always put family-and community-first.
