June 21, 1947 – June 25, 2025
Ronald Leo Russell, 77, of Bradenton, FL, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, with his loving wife, Beth, by his side.
"Ron" was born and raised in Johnstown, PA, the son of Walter and Emma Russell, and brother to James and Linda. Always active, he developed a passion for baseball and athletics from an early age. After graduating from high school, Ron attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania for his undergraduate studies, followed by Penn State University, where he earned his Master's degree in Exceptional Student Education. He later earned an additional Master's degree in Educational Leadership after moving to Florida.
Ron retired as Director of Exceptional Student Education in Manatee County, concluding a 45-year career as an educator and administrator. His career was marked by a fierce advocacy for the needs of students with exceptionalities and their families. He devoted himself not only to his students but also to the many educators and staff he led, cultivating an environment of support and family within his department.
Ron will be remembered for his kindness, gentle nature, and mischievous laugh. He had a keen sense of humor and an insatiable appetite for making others laugh-always quick with a running joke, a giggle-inducing prank, or a carefully written list of trivia for every special occasion.
He had a passion for tennis, both as a dedicated fan and avid player, regularly having matches with his close friends and his wife. Throughout their marriage, Ron and Beth shared a love of hiking and nature. They enjoyed many travel adventures together, with a particular fondness for hiking in national parks and appreciating the world's natural beauty.
Ron was known for his devotion to Beth, his love for his dogs, and his notorious affection for his meticulously cleaned car. Deeply generous of spirit, Ron lived a life of service-to his community and to those he loved. He was a consummate caretaker, regularly checking on and assisting dear friends.
A devout Catholic, Ron brought Holy Communion to his fellow parishioners as a Eucharistic Minister at Saints Peter & Paul the Apostles Catholic Church following his retirement. He also served on the Board of the Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County, furthering his lifelong support of children in his community.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Emma Russell, and his brother, James (Roberta) Russell. He is survived by his wife, Beth Severson; his sister, Linda (Raymond) Mihalic; and his loving siblings-in-law, Lynne Severson, Todd (Missy) Severson, and Brad (Cindy) Severson, along with several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces.
Ron will be forever loved and remembered by his many close friends, colleagues, and extended family.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 11th, at Saints Peter & Paul the Apostles Catholic Church (2850 75th St W, Bradenton, FL 34209), with a celebration of life immediately following at Bradenton Country Club (4646 9th Avenue W., Bradenton, FL 34209).
We know that Ron would be honored by donations made in his memory to Special Olympics or Catholic Relief Services.
