Spotlight on Education: McNeal Team Wins Countywide Math Championship

BRADENTON -- The team of Sullivan Maley and Blake Wood, from McNeal Elementary School, won the 2014 Manatee County School District Math Superstars Championship at the Manatee Technical Institute on Thursday. The win sends the championship cup to the east county school for the first time.

For the competition, a two-person team is chosen from each of the district's 35 elementary schools based on performance in the state's Sunshine Math program. At the competition, each team is given a challenging, 30-question test, comprised of above grade-level problems. There is a 45-minute time limit and the team with the highest score wins.

In addition to the cup, the winning team members each received $50, a calculator and a victory brunch hosted by the Bradenton chapter of the American Association of University Women, who sponsored the competition.
