Spotlight on Education: Southeast FFA Forestry Team

Posted

BRADENTON -- On Thursday, October 3rd, five members of the Southeast High FFA chapter – Luis Solorzano, Kaylee Betts, Zach Butler, Colt Travis, and Paula Strasser-Dykxhoorn – traveled to Punta Gorda, Florida for the District 10 Forestry Career Development Event.

In this competition, members had to correctly identify trees based on their leaves, disorders affecting trees, tools used for the forestry industry, the amount of wood in a plot of trees based on the diameter and height, and how to interpret a 7.5 minute topographic map.

The competition also consisted of a 50-question multiple choice test. Southeast won first place in the 2013 District Forestry Competition. The team hopes to continue this success at the State Finals Competition in November at Perry, FL.
