BRADENTON — Don’t have cable and don’t want to go the a sports bar to watch the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII this Sunday? Not a problem. Fox-owned streaming service Tubi will stream the game live, and you don’t need a credit card entry or cable sign-in to watch.
Tubi was founded as a free, ad-supported streaming service in 2014 and quickly began amassing an impressive amount of subscribers and streaming hours. In 2020, Fox Corporation acquired Tubi for $440 million, saving a relative fortune over what other large media companies have spent developing a streaming service from the ground up.
Now that streamers like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime are increasingly relying on ad-supported plans to offer lower monthly subscription fees, getting Tubi for free makes it an even more attractive alternative. There is not nearly as much original programming. However, the platform is very competitive in terms of movies and TV.
The big game will provide Fox with an excellent opportunity to expose the service to younger audiences in the key demographic who are less likely to have traditional cable. In fact, Tubi says that nearly 80 percent of its audience does not have cable subscriptions. Users do have to use a valid email service to create an account, but they do not have to provide credit card information, as Tubi is an entirely free app.
Sunday’s simulcast of Fox’s Super Bowl broadcast will be the first time the game is available for free on a major streaming platform. In 2022 and 2024, NBC and CBS required consumers to sign up for their streaming platforms—Paramount+ and Peacock—to watch the big game.
Tubi made its Super Bowl debut in a viral commercial during last year’s Super Bowl (see below).
