Texas GOP Considers Banning Legislators Deemed Insufficiently Conservative from Upcoming Primaries

Posted

AUSTIN, TX — The Republican Party of Texas' governing board will meet in Austin on Saturday to decide whether to begin censuring state representatives whom party leaders deem insufficiently conservative, potentially banning them from the upcoming primary ballot.

The daylong tribunal will determine whether 10 Texas House Republicans tried to impede the party's priorities during this year's legislative session.

Although many Republicans hailed this year's session as the most successful for conservatives ever, some party activists have accused House leadership of working against some of the party's top priorities and argued that they should be barred from the primary ballot under rules adopted at the Texas GOP's convention last year.

A rule on censures was expanded to bar officials from the primary ballot if they have been censured within the last two years.
