Joan A. (nee Hoekstra) Cooper, 80, Bradenton, died July 16, 2014. Born in Chicago, IL she moved to Bradenton in 1999 from Brookfield, IL and attended Bradenton Christian Reformed Church.

Predeceased by son, Roger; survived by husband of 60 years, Marvin B. of Bradenton, FL; sons, Robert D. (Susan) of Everett, WA, Craig A. (Jane) of Brookfield, WI and Steven R. (Deann) of Bradenton, FL; daughters, Carol A. (Keith) Parr of Bradenton, FL and Marybeth (Matthew) Steigenga of Chandler, AZ; 1 sister; 17 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren.

Barbara Jean Doan, 66, Bradenton, died July 16, 2014. Born in Beaver Dam, WI she moved to Bradenton in 1987 from Waupun, WI and was a member of Cortez Road Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. She was an assistant director of nursing, staff development coordinator, and risk manager at several health facilities, most recently at Westminster Towers. She was a nursing instructor at Moraine Park Technical Institute of WI and at the Waupun Prison.

She was active at Emmanuel Reformed Church as a Jr. Christian Endeavor's Leader and a Sunday School Teacher & Superintendent, at Bradenton CRC on the Fellowship Committee, worked with the Bantu Refugee Ministry, and served as a Solve House volunteer. She was a foster parent and her hobbies included travel, photography, and mug collecting from around the world.

Predeceased by husband of 31 years, Allen Dale Doan and son, Jeffrey Allen Doan; survived by sons, Gregory Allen Doan of Bradenton, FL and Matthew Allen (Christine) Doan of Orlando, FL; daughter, Jennifer Ann Doan of Orlando, FL; parents, Ewald and Florence Zurbuchen of Bradenton, FL; foster son, Jonathan Jermaine Smith of Victorville, CA.

Eugenia “Gene” Raymond Shannon (Mrs. Joseph E.), 85, of Bradenton, went to be with her Savior on July 15, 2014. She was born July 20, 1928 in Lakeland, FL, the youngest of five children of Dr. and Mrs. Charles A. Raymond. Gene graduated from Lakeland High School and attended Queens College, Charlotte, N.C. She was a receptionist for the doctors of Watson Clinic in Lakeland. While in High school Gene was very active in the Glee club, church choir, and especially enjoyed being a member of the trio, “Skipperettes” that sang throughout the area.

Eugenia met her husband Joseph E. Shannon, while he attended Florida Southern College in Lakeland. They married on July 20, 1948 in First Presbyterian Church, downtown Lakeland, and moved to Bradenton in August 1948. They became members of First Presbyterian Church, Bradenton on October 4, 1948- (World-wide communion Day).

Four children were born to Gene and Joe: Sally Jean, Katherine Ann, Joseph Raymond, and Rowland Peek.

Gene immediately began singing in the church choir, teaching Sunday school and served as president of the Homebuilder’s class with her husband, and filled many offices of the local Women of the Church. Her first “job” with the Women of the Church in the Presbytery was chairman of the Columbia Friendship Circle, then chairman of Church Extension, Leadership and Resources, Nominating Committee, a District Chairman and First Vice President, President of the Women of the Church, Westminster Presbytery, Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. on April 2, 1970. She served as Moderator of the Synod of Florida Presbyterian Women and Moderator of Westminster Presbytery PCUSA.

While continuing to be active in church and community Gene worked closely with her husband in their business at Shannon Funeral Home.

Gene’s background of Presbyterian ministers goes back many generations. Her grandfather, Dr. T.W. Raymond, was president of Mississippi State College for Women, Holly Springs, MS. This school later combined with Belhaven College now in Jackson, MS. Dr. and Mrs. T.W. Raymond moved to Lake Thonotosassa, FL where he preached at the Seffner Church for many years before coming to Palmetto, FL to preach.

Dr. Charles A. Raymond, Gene’s father, was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Lakeland, FL for 25 years. He was most active in the Church Extension (Home Mission) Committee of Presbytery, also serving as moderator of the Synod of Florida and Westminster Presbytery.

Community activities for Mrs. Shannon were: member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, President of Beta Tau, ritual chapter, President of XI Alpha Gamma, exemplar chapter; the Entre Nous Organization. She was a member of PEO Chapter CC where she served as President for two years, and with Chapter EI where she held several positions. She formerly served as president of Ballard Elementary School PTA. Vice-President and member of Zonta International. County Chairman for Volunteers for Shelter for Abused Children and served on the Board of Manatee Children’s Services.

Gene served as president of Women of the Church, Westminster Presbytery, serving on the Home Mission Committee of the Presbytery for many years. She also served as President of the local WOC, First Presbyterian Church, Bradenton 1976-1978. Was director of Women’s Florida Synodical Conference in 1977 at Lake Yale, FL. Gene was elected to the session of First Presbyterian Church, Bradenton as an active ruling elder and on January 14, 1979 was ordained and installed.

Gene served for over 30 years with the Presbyterian Retirement Homes where she has served in various capacities including Chair of the Board. She began a Sunday evening hymn-sing at the Bradenton Manor in 1961, which she carried on for many years. She was added to the Board of the Presbyterian Homes of the Synod of Florida in 1976 and was placed on the Executive Committee in 1978, where she served as chairwoman of the Board 1986-1989, Vice Chair and President of Corporations in 1989.

Mrs. Shannon was elected to membership on the Board of Trustees of Stillman College in the Class of 1990 by the 199th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). She attended her first meeting in Tuscaloosa, AL in 1987. She was appointed to serve on the Resource Development Committee.

Gene was predeceased by her loving husband Joe in 2001, a son Rowland in 2014 and three brothers and one sister. She is survived by her three dear children; Sally (Bill) McGill of Braselton, GA, Katherine Ann and J. Raymond Shannon both of Bradenton, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 P.M. on Friday, July 18, 2014 at Shannon Funeral Home Westview Chapel, 5610 Manatee Avenue West, Bradenton. A Celebration of Gene’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church, 1402 Manatee Avenue West, Bradenton. Committal services will follow at Fogartyville Cemetery, Bradenton.

Lawrence J. Wilson, 91, Bradenton, died July 13, 2014. Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania he moved to Bradenton in 1990 from Phillipsburg, New Jersey. A Veteran of the US Army Air Corps during World War II, where he worked on B17 Bombers and he was the former Head of Landscaping for the Perico Bay Club.

Predeceased by parents, Edward and Catherine (Holland) Wilson; wife, Emilie; survived by daughter, Suzanne (Michael Jones) Willever of Parrish, FL; sister, Miriam Reuter; granddaughter, Karen Moya; great-grandchildren, Samantha and Chad.

James Phillip McCarthy, 80, Bradenton, died Jul 12, 2014.

Predeceased by son, James P., Jr. Survived by wife, Rose, of Bradenton, FL and nephew, Michael (Angela) Nobile of Portland, ME.

John Quincy Goodrich Jr., ''Jack'', of Longboat Key, FL died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Thursday, July 10, 2014. Born July 9, 1940 in Glastonbury CT, he was the son of John Quincy and Grace Miller Goodrich. He resided in Longboat Key for over 37 years. Prior to his move to Florida, he lived in Glastonbury and until recently, spent time each summer visiting his family home in Groton Long Point CT. He was a graduate of Tabor Academy, the University of Connecticut and the LSU School of Banking. His career was in commercial banking and lending.

Jack served for 5 years in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War; first as a F4 pilot aboard the USS Ranger CV-61 and later as the first Captain of Swift Boat PCF 45. He served an additional 11 years in the Naval Reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. A lifelong sailor, he was a licensed commercial Captain and enjoyed his membership in the Brotherhood of the Coast and numerous Yacht Clubs. He volunteered and served as a Captain in the Longboat Key Fire Department. An avid golfer and gardener, he also enjoyed traveling and cruising. He was an active member of the Longboat Island Chapel where he sang in the choir.

Jack is survived by his son, John Q. Goodrich III, daughter- in- law, Charity, and their children, John, Claire and Grant of San Diego CA; his daughter, Johanna Goetcheus, son-in-law, John, and their children, Grace, Davis, Hayes, Liza and Jax of Kensington MD. He was predeceased in 2010 by his cherished partner and wife of 32 years, Margaret “Peggy” Annett. He also leaves his sister, Susan Goodrich Motycka and her husband, David of Glastonbury; his fiancé, Carron Cherrie of Bradenton FL and his beloved dog, Sailor.

If still waters run deep, as the Latin proverb asserts, then Philip A. Hack, Jr. of Bradenton, Florida possessed an unfathomable soul. The eldest son of Philip August Hack, Sr. (1916-1999) and Daisy Saunders Hack (1923-2005), brother to Joseph Edward Hack (b. 1946) and Anthony Ryan Hack (b. 1959), stepson to Ethelyn Hack (1916-2013), Phil was born in Morehead City, North Carolina on Saturday 10, June 1944. He passed away on Wednesday 28, May 2014.  Phil was inimitably selfless, possessed a Herculean work ethic, was true in friendship, and ardently devoted to his family.  

That said Phil might have most closely identified with his three-year stint as a soldier in the United States Army.  Phil´s DD Form 214 reflects that HACK, PHILIP AUGUST JR was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army as a Sergeant on 14 March 1968 having been awarded his Parachutist Badge and the National Defense Service Medal.  Notwithstanding the official record, it was Veterans Day 2010 when Phil expressed to his then seven-year-old nephew that his service to our country, inclusive of two tours of duty in Southeast Asia, represented the three greatest years of his life.  This as a result of the brotherhood, the camaraderie, the esprit de corps engendered by the soldiers with whom he served.  

Phil´s vestige may have left this earth but his soul remains steadfast in the hearts and minds of countless business associates, friends, and family members most notably, his loving companion Sue; dear friend, Stacey; North Carolinian cousin, Terry; nieces, Kate and Maggie; sister-in-law, Brooke; nephew, Ryan; and brother Tony.  An excerpted quote from a poem by Thomas Campbell (1777-1844) reads, ''To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.''  Thus one meditates that Phil is resting peacefully knowing that which was true in life remains true in death: Phil lived well and will long be remembered.  I miss you "Bub."
