House Bill 1191 was passed by the legislature and is awaiting Gov. Ron DeSantis' signature.
The legislation, which had been pushed by Mosaic, orders the Florida Department of Transportation to study the potential use of phosphogypsum in building roads.
Phosphogypsum is a radioactive byproduct of phosphate mining and using it as a material for building roads would provide the industry with a profitable way to dispose of it, similar to the manner in which it rids itself of fluoride.
Opponents of the legislation argue that high radionuclide levels, increased health risks, and increased risk of groundwater contamination are among the reasons that phosphogypsum should not be used in road construction.
