Urbanite Announces Exciting Season to Come

Posted

SARASOTA — Urbanite, a consistently exciting black-box theater in downtown Sarasota, recently announced its 2023/24 season, which includes four main productions that aim to shed light on predisposed prejudice and explore the importance of perspective.

"The 2023/2024 season marks a milestone for Urbanite, as it will be our 10th season," said Producing Artistic Director Summer Wallace. "Over the past decade, Urbanite has remained steadfast in its commitment to bringing the boldest voices and new works to Sarasota "Season X is no different and will feature a regional premiere and three world premieres. The season captures the intricacies of the human experience, weaving together tales of mystery, loneliness, love, identity, and resilience."

Urbanite will kick things off with the regional premiere of Adam Rapp’s 2020 Tony-nominated drama, The Sound Inside, which will run from October 20 to December 3. Kristin Clippard will direct the critically-acclaimed, suspense-filled drama that explores the limits of an unsuspecting friendship between student and professor.

Next, Olivia Scanlon will star in the world premiere of Katie Bender’s one-woman show Judith, a story of mistaken identity and finding one's worth. Directed by Brendon Fox, it will run from January 5 to February 18, 2024.

Brenda Withers’ Westminster, winner of the 2023 Urbanite Theatre Modern Works Festival, will get its world premiere during a March 22 to April 28 run. Directed by Wallace, the morality play/screwball romp digs into "acceptable" social prejudices and the consequences of leaving those biases unchecked.

The season closes out with the world premiere of Terry Guest’s Oak, directed by Mikael Burke from May 31 to June 30, 2024. Guest previously wowed Urbanite audiences with his smash hit At the Wake of a Dead Drag Queen. A recipient of the 2020 Charles Rowan Beye New Play Commission, this Southern gothic drama is highly anticipated.

"Each play will transport you to new realms, make you think, make you laugh, and leave you feeling inspired," says Wallace.
